Paisley, my youngest sister, has been known to take advantage of such generosity. Which is why she’s in the mess she’s in now. If I didn’t keep track of her, she’d max out my credit card on takeout.

“You don’t have to mother her, you know.”

“If I don’t, who will?”

“She’s twenty-three,” Chloe reminds me.

“Don’t suppose you have any odds jobs for her out at the ranch?” The idea of telling Paisley she has to start paying rent gives me hives. But I know if I don’t set some hard boundaries soon, she’ll bat those innocent baby eyes at me like she does with everyone else. I’m giving her time to heal from her last disaster of a relationship, but she has some growing up to do.

“I don’t think you want her around the ranch,” Chloe says.

“You think she’ll hit on Granger?”

“Oh my god, you’ve got it bad!” Chloe giggles so obnoxiously that a couple across the street turns their heads. “Even if she did, Granger would never go for her. She’s not his type. But there are other hands who might get…”

“Handsy?”

“Among other things.”

The Daisy Hills Ranch is known to give those seeking a second chance a home. Many of the hands have been to jail. Granger included. Which is a detail I haven’t admitted knowing. To anyone. It was several years ago, and I suspect there’s a story the paper didn’t entirely report. All I know is that he slugged his old boss in Montana. But Chloe is right. The ranch might not be the best environment for my baby sister right now. “Well, if you come up with any ideas, let me know.”

Chloe elbows me.

“What?”

“Don’t look now,” she says in that teasing tone. “But your cowboy is headed this way.”

A swarm of butterflies takes flight in my belly at the sight of him strutting through the park in his Stetson. He looks good enough to lick from head to toe. Something I plan to do very soon. “Looks like my plan’s working.”
